Cold and flu season is around the corner, which means we all need to do everything in our power to prepare ourselves to fight off those pesky cold germs. Believe it or not, there are actually a few things you can do to boost your immune system that have a few extra benefits on the side! So, before you become a vitamin-popping maniac, try these simple solutions:
1. Sleep. We are all guilty of never getting the recommended amount of sleep each night. Whether it’s because we have too much to-do’s for one day or we are staying up an extra hour to watch our favorite TV show…we all have our reasons as to why. But, dedicating at least 8 hours of sleep each night can ultimately improve your overall health AND quality of the hours you are awake. Lack of sleep causes the functions of the body to work improperly, or not at all. In order to make sure your immune system is doing its best, you need to give it some rest!
2. Exercise. Aside from the obvious benefit of physical fitness, exercising regularly also promotes the immune system. In order to fight off bacteria and viruses, your body needs a particular protein called antibodies. These antibodies are produced as a result of getting active, and the more antibodies you have warding off bacteria and viruses, the less often you will become sick…so get out there and exercise!
3. Diet. A healthy diet is a great habit to embrace no matter what. It is also a great way to boost your immune system while keeping yourself physically fit at the same time! Eating good, fresh foods will provide the body with the necessary vitamins and minerals it needs to function at its best, and fight off any sicknesses. Also, vitamins found in natural foods are actually more beneficial for you than if you were to take vitamin supplements…so, make sure to include plenty of fruits and veggies in your everyday diet!
