For those of you who are looking to simply tone while keeping your slender figures, this post is for you! Steering clear of weights all together is not the way to achieve toning results, and it definitely does not mean you will be packing on the “bulk” if you do use weights. The key is a happy medium, Strengthening your muscles is imperative in order to achieve those nice toned muscles. Here are a few ways to tone up without bulking up:

Weight Training. Most people think that lifting weights will lead to bulky muscles and bulging veins. This is far from accurate. Weight training is absolutely necessary in order to achieve toned muscles. However, the type of weight training is extremely important. Each person is different and therefore requires a different weightlifting regimen in order to successfully reach their own personal fitness goals. It is suggested that doing short, frequent repetitions is best to add strength without the bulk.

Yoga. People often overlook this practice when it comes to choosing a fitness program. Yoga actually offers a tremendous amount of muscle strengthening through unique poses and positions, which will lead to those toned “guns” you’ve always desired. Plus, there’s the added bonus of increased flexibility with this practice as well.

Running. This is an easy and effective way to work multiple muscle groups at once. Since running is a cardio exercise, it is perfect for shredding the fatty layers that sit on top of your already existing muscles. Once these fatty layers deteriorate, muscle definition will begin to show!

Pilates. By practicing Pilates regularly, increased core strength can be achieved which will result in a toner mid-section. Not only is this a great way to increase overall strength, but it’s a super easy way to do it! Classes are often offered at local gyms, and DVDs can be purchased for at-home workouts.

The best way to achieve overall toned muscles is by combining two or more of the above exercises together. Cardio is a must in order to rid the body of excess fat, along with weight training to strengthen the muscles. As long as you take part in a least one exercise that falls into each of these two categories, you’re golden! Happy toning!
