How to Keep Your Kids Safe When Using Fitness Equipment

May 28, 2015

Bringing fitness equipment into your home is a wonderful way to encourage the whole family to stay fit. However, safety concerns can come up. As a rule, children should not use home fitness equipment.

Teens, on the other hand, can use home fitness equipment when taught how to use it properly. You should discuss rules and demonstrate how to use it properly when the equipment arrives to reduce the risk of accidental injury.

Establish Rules

Children naturally exhibit curiosity, which is a dangerous mix when combined with home gym equipment. When bringing a piece of residential fitness equipment into your home, you want to make sure you establish rules for the whole family to follow. While rules can vary from home to home, all families need to be aware that equipment should not:

  • Be used alone
  • Be used other than for its intended purpose
  • Be approached when someone else is using it

Demonstrate Proper Use

With fitness equipment, it is easy to injure yourself if not using the correct technique or following established rules. By showing everyone in the family the right way to use the machine, it will significantly reduce the risk of injury.

Even though children should not use home fitness equipment, it’s important to educate them as well as teens on how to use it properly. Proper education is a good way to prevent them from accidently harming themselves in the future.

Ensure Understanding

After discussing the rules and demonstrating the proper technique, it is important to ensure understanding of what has just been discussed. A great way to do this is to quickly quiz all members of the household on the rules and information. Also, reiterate that home fitness equipment is not a toy, and help everyone who is not a child safely try the equipment with the proper technique.
