Before taking your family hiking, it’s a good idea to scout out the planned route beforehand. You don’t want to choose a trail and suddenly discover that it isn’t right for your family’s fitness level. Researching an appropriate trail will save you a lot of time and trouble and make the outing more fun.

Is it Stroller Friendly?

It’s never too early to take your kids hiking if you’re prepared. If you have very young children who still need a stroller, there are many are stroller friendly parks available to you. Alternatively, you can carry your small child in a baby carrier.

Are You Supplied?

Even if you don’t plan on being gone for a long period of time, it’s extremely important to bring essential supplies like:

  • First aid kit
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug repellant
  • Healthy snacks
  • Prescription medicine, if necessary

That way, you are prepared in case of an injury and don’t go without necessary nutrients. Also make sure that everyone is wearing appropriate footgear and clothing for the weather and hiking conditions. That means no flip flops and flowing clothing that get caught on branches.

Can They Go the Distance?

While you may not make it very far on the trail, it’s still important to make sure that your kids can walk the trail. Kids can get tired easily if they aren’t used to such activity, so it’s a good idea to practice walking with them before you set off on the trail.

Also, be patient and let your kids set the pace since they will walk slower than you and be interested in stopping and checking out an interesting looking rock or an insect. Finally, always be prepared to leave early if your kids get tired and want to go home. It’s best to call it a day and head home rather than continue on with everyone tired and upset.
