Six ways to give your metabolism a boost

May 15, 2013

When it comes to losing weight and staying healthy, your metabolism has a large role to play. Metabolism is the process that converts the food you eat into energy, so giving it a boost can mean burning more calories during your workouts.

1. Fit in cardio
Incorporating cardio into your workout can make a world of difference. All you need to do is hop on a stationary bike for 45 minutes and you’ll speed up your metabolic rate for the next 12 to 14 hours. The TRUE ES900 Recumbent Bike is not only equipped to accommodate all fitness levels, it also has a self-generating power source so you can keep it anywhere in your home where you’ll be the most motivated to complete your cardio routine.

2. Increase intensity
Consider tackling the new interval training craze to amp up your workout and boost your metabolism. Interval runs on your home treadmill can be particularly effective for burning mass amounts of calories, so try to incorporate this exercise routine into your cardio plan at least once a week.

3. Eat breakfast
There’s a reason why breakfast is considered to be the most important meal of the day: It jump-starts your metabolism! Whether it’s Greek yogurt, orange slices or a whole-wheat bagel, the importance of eating breakfast cannot be overstated. Don’t forget to continue eating small meals throughout the day! It will keep your blood sugar levels consistent and your metabolism functioning properly.

4. Drink more water
Proper hydration is a key component of a healthy metabolism. Aim for eight cups a day, and feel free to supplement with green or Kombucha tea. Beverages to avoid? Alcohol and diet soda. Don’t worry,  it’s still OK to have a cup of coffee in the morning – it will actually boost your metabolism three hours later.

5. Get plenty of sleep
Studies show that getting seven to eight hours of sleep every night is crucial for maintaining a healthy metabolism. But be forewarned: Getting too much sleep can have as adverse of an effect on your metabolism as getting too little, so try and keep it consistent.

6. De-stress
Stress affects both your mental and physical health, so attempting to relax when the going gets tough is in your best interest. Whether it’s yoga, meditation or reading a good book, taking a moment to de-stress will also keep your metabolism in check.
